Noida: Protest against illegal building crackdown

NOIDA: A group of residents in Shahberi staged a protest at the collectorate in Surajpur against alleged crackdown on unauthorised structures in their neighbourhood. The protesting members, holding placards in their hands, raised slogans and demanded the government to safeguard their interest.They said they have invested their hard-earned money and bought flats and shops in the colony. “We also registered our homes with the stamps and registration department. We completed all the formalities of buying a house. The Noida Authority, Greater Noida Authority or police did not advise us against investment in these properties at that time. Since two buildings collapsed in neighbourhood, they woke up from slumber and termed almost the entire society illegal. They have served notices to explain why these buildings are not demolished and we are living in fear,” said Subodh Kumar, a local resident.He said the authority and administration should take action against the developers for cheating innocent homebuyers. “Most homebuyers had no idea about the kind of flats in Shahberi. We belong to middle class families and we can’t afford another house. The government should safeguard our interest,” said another protester.The protesting members also submitted a memorandum addressed to the chief minister at the office of district magistrate. DM B N Singh assured them that he would talk to the development authorities over the issue.The Greater Noida Authority launched a crackdown on unauthorised buildings after two six-storey buildings collapsed in Shahberi in which nine persons died in July 18. At least 24 persons were booked in connection with the building collapse in Shahberi.
