Noida plans to end dog bite cases, sterilise strays

Noida: The Noida Authority has floated a tender to rope in animal welfare organisations for its animal birth control programme. The organisation will be responsible for sterilisation and immunisation of stray dogs in the city. NGOs/animal welfare groups and private veterinary doctors who have a Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree and are registered with the UP Veterinary Council can apply.The drive will be conducted at a centre being set up in Sector 94.Noida Authority officials said applicants should have their own infrastructure in place for the sterilisation and immunisation of stray dogs. They should have adequate staff (technical and non-technical) and vehicles as well for picking up and releasing sterialised dogs to the area from where they had been picked up.The programme will be conducted as per the Animal Birth Control (Dog) Rules, 2001. The Authority will fix monthly targets for sterialisation, but the minimum will be 750 dogs a month, officials said.The move is significant as many cases of stray dog bites have been reported in several high-rise societies in the city.Sanjay Mahapatra, the founder of House of Stray Animals, an NGO, welcomed the initiative.“The launch of birth control programme will curb the incidents of dog bites in many sectors. Several agencies should be hired for the proper and timely implementation of the exercise,” he said. The last date of application is October 17.
