NOIDA: If residents are not queuing up outside Puja pandals in the evening, they are doing so in front of water tankers in the morning. The festive season has been marred by a scarcity of water in most of the sectors. With the Upper Ganga Canal closed since October 6 for the annual de-silting exercise, residents have been getting only half an hour of supply every day. They are left at the mercy of water tankers engaged by various agencies to get potable water for their daily needs.Despite assurances from the Noida Authority against water shortage, the reality is that out of the 365 borewells only 170 are functional while the existing nine rainny wells are unable to meet the requirements. Apart from this, depletion of ground water level due to rampant construction work has made the situation worse. As a result, with each passing day the residents of sectors 11, 12, 15, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 30, 34, 35, 36, 51, 52, 53, 56 etc are finding it difficult to carry on with their lives without proper water supply. “Noida residents are suffering a lot since October 7 due to irregular water supply. In old sectors, not even a single drop of water has been supplied in the last couple of days. Noida Authority’s excuse of cleaning the Gang Canal does not hold any ground. The city used to get enough supply when there was no Ganga water earlier,” said Sunil Sethi, RWA president of Sector 31.Sethi, one of the early settlers in the city, added that the supply of muddy water currently is due to the non-cleaning of water reservoir by the Authority that has also increased the water tariff this year.“The Authority has not prepared a road-map for future strains on the city. That’s why even after 40 years of its existence, Noida fails to provide even proper water which is the basic need to its residents,” said Sethi.Even as project engineer of Noida Authority A K Goyal assured action, S C Arora, the deputy general manager, Jal/Sewer department maintained that the water shortage will continue till the Upper Ganga canal remains shut.“We are short of supply by 50% due to shutdown of Upper Ganga canal. Since we are supplying water through ground water and tube well sources, the quality will also remain yellowish. The Noida Authority is also sending tankers in areas where water shortage persists,” said Arora.
