Centre steps in as onion prices in NCR touch Rs 40/kg

"In the last one week there has been Rs 5-7 per kilo increase in wholesale rates of onion. The delay also caused a drop in production.The major onion producing states are Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh among some other states. NEW DELHI: The Centre on Friday directed government cooperative Nafed to increase onion supply in NCR from its buffer stock and also asked Mother Dairy to reduce rates by Rs 2 per kg at all its 400 Safal outlets.The retail prices of onions have increased to Rs 30-40 per kg due to short supply. "Arrivals of kharif crop are expected to increase significantly within a week. "Mother Dairy has agreed to reduce the rates from Rs 25.9 to Rs 23.9 for the loose variant and from Rs 27.9 to Rs 25.9 for the packed variant at all its stores in Delhi," the government said.Sharma said that due to rainfall in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and also in some parts of Maharashtra harvesting was delayed for around a week which resulted in shortage of supply of onions from these states.

This would improve availability in consuming areas, thereby helping moderate prices," the consumer affairs ministry said.A high-level committee, which keeps track of the key kitchen items, also decided that onion supplies in Delhi from the buffer stock under the price stabilisation fund (PSF) should be increased by two to three times from the current level so as to tide over any constraint in the interim supply of onions in the market."In the last one week there has been Rs 5-7 per kilo increase in wholesale rates of onion. It is due to delay in harvesting of onions in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh from where a large volume of onions are supplied to Azadpur Mandi," said Rajendra Sharma, general secretary Onion and Potato Merchants Association (Azadpur mandi).Altogether 57 trucks of onions arrived at Azadpur Mandi on Friday as against around 80 trucks which usually arrive everyday in this period in view of the expected hike in demand post-Dussehra.The Centre has created a buffer stock using the PSF to offload it in the market in case of abnormal increase in prices to contain price rise."Mother Dairy has agreed to reduce the rates from Rs 25.9 to Rs 23.9 for the loose variant and from Rs 27.9 to Rs 25.9 for the packed variant at all its stores in Delhi," the government said.Sharma said that due to rainfall in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and also in some parts of Maharashtra harvesting was delayed for around a week which resulted in shortage of supply of onions from these states.
