A lot of lives could be saved if people follow rules,” said SP (traffic), S N Singh. There were only 714 accidents last year in which 318 people had died. “Throughout November, we will focus on three Es — engineering, education and enforcement — to improve prevailing condition on roads.

NOIDA: Increase in traffic volume on the city’s roads due to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and speeding vehicles on this and other expressways have been blamed for the whopping increase in accidents and related fatalities as well as injuries this year in Noida. In 2017, there were 1,043 accidents in the city whereas 3,163 accidents have been recorded this year till August. Similarly, the number of deaths and injured persons in these accidents were 423 and 892, respectively, last year.On the other hand, 1,364 persons have died and 2,399 have been injured in the past eight months.Comparing the data in the years between 2014 and 2018 reveals that there has been a 224% spike in accidents between 2014 and 2018. Similarly, there has been a 253% increase in related fatalities. The data for 2018 is for the period between January and August and will only go up till the end of this year.Meanwhile, in Ghaziabad, 329 people have lost their lives in 822 accidents till October this year. As many as 627 people were also injured during this period. There were only 714 accidents last year in which 318 people had died. As the road safety month commenced on Thursday, the data indicates that much more needs to be done to bring down these numbers. The number of challans issued to the speeding vehicles in Noida this year shows that it is emerging to be a major problem. According to traffic police, 1,62,347 of the total 4,49,011 challans issued from January to October 2018 have been for speeding. The highway traffic management system (HTMS) easily detects traffic violations but a person gets a challan after months and there is no immediate action against him/her.In May this year, TOI had reported that only 35,124 challans generated till September 10, 2017, had been sent to violators via post. While one person had been caught speeding by CCTV cameras as many as 68 times from February 2017 to February 2018, another had been caught speeding as many as 72 times between August 2016 and February 2017.Traffic police said that many persons, who had their vehicles registered at a particular address, changed their location and made it difficult for them to recover fines. “Intimation is an issue. While we send challans via speed post, many violators are not found at their address. The only way to send a challan to them is through court which takes months,” SP (traffic) Anil Jha said.Traffic awareness campaigns have already begun in Noida and Ghaziabad. “Throughout November, we will focus on three Es — engineering, education and enforcement — to improve prevailing condition on roads. Commuters have little regards for traffic rules. A lot of lives could be saved if people follow rules,” said SP (traffic), S N Singh.
