Noida building collapse: Two officials indicted

NOIDA: The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority ( GNIDA )’s internal committee has indicted two officials for alleged negligence and turning a blind eye to rampant unauthorised constructions in Shahberi The UP government had suspended two officials — project manager VP Singh and assistant project manager Akhtar Abbas Zaidi — after the building collapse in which nine persons were killed in July. However, the two buildings in Shahberi that collapsed had six storeys each.Sources said the internal committee had indicted the two officials as they failed to take appropriate measures to check unauthorised constructions in the area. The Authority will submit the internal committee’s probe report to the government soon,” he said. The committee will soon submit its report to the GNIDA CEO, who will then send it to the government.KK Gupta, additional CEO at GNIDA, said the internal committee was yet to submit its report.

The government had also directed Meerut commissioner Anita Meshram to investigate the collapse.GNIDA had launched departmental proceedings against the two officials after it was found that scores of buildings had mushroomed in the area without their maps being approved by the authority.The development of freehold properties in Noida is governed by the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority (Fourth Amendment) Manual, 2016. It says building layouts in rural areas have to be approved by the Noida Authority and that a project must be vetted by “competent officials”. The maximum permissible floor area ratio (FAR) is 1.8, with a height of 15 metres (up to 3 floors). However, the two buildings in Shahberi that collapsed had six storeys each.Sources said the internal committee had indicted the two officials as they failed to take appropriate measures to check unauthorised constructions in the area. The committee will soon submit its report to the GNIDA CEO, who will then send it to the government.KK Gupta, additional CEO at GNIDA, said the internal committee was yet to submit its report. “The government had suspended the two officials after the buildings collapsed. The Authority will submit the internal committee’s probe report to the government soon,” he said.
