Ghaziabad: Amid protests from traders, the Ghaziabad Development Authority continued with its sealing drive in Indirapuram on Saturday. The traders, meanwhile, sought the support of Sahibabad MLA Sunil Sharma after getting no assurance from GDA vice-chairperson Kanchan Verma. Sharma has called a tripartite meeting of traders, GDA officials and representatives of the FedAOA, on whose petition the Allahabad high court had directed the traffic department to ensure unhindered flow of traffic in the township by cracking down on commerical units that operate from residential areas.“The GDA, even in the face of protests from traders, sealed off six roadside shops, mostly car repair garages in Abhay Khand area on Saturday,” said V K Singh, officer on special duty, GDA. “The shops were found to be encroaching on roads and causing traffic jams. In the past three days, we have sealed 36 such shops and the crackdown will continue,” said Singh. The representatives of vypar mandal, which is spearheading the traders’ protest, met MLA Sunil Sharma and was assured of help. “We met MLA Sunil Sharma after we got no respite from the GDA and we were told that a meeting with GDA and FedAOA has been convened which will take place shortly to find a way out to this problem,” said Omveer Yadav, president of the vyapar mandal. “But it is unfortunate that while on one hand we are seeking some respite, the GDA on the other hand continued with its sealing drive,” added Yadav.“In that case, what purpose the will meeting serve when the GDA is adamant on carrying out the drive? If a similar situation persists, then we will have to give a second thought whether to attend the meeting or not,” said Yadav.Sunil Sharma, while speaking to TOI, said the issue is contentious as sealing is taking place as per the high court order. “I have made an effort to find an amicable solution to the problem in such a way that the traders’ grievances are addressed without interfering with court’s order,” said Sharma. “It is in this backdrop I have arranged a meeting with traders, GDA and FedAOA to find a middle path,” said Sharma.FedAOA president Alok Kumar, against whom traders are up in arms, welcomed Sharma’s move. “We filed the petition in the court without any ulterior motive as roadside encroachment is playing havoc with traffic movement causing inconvenience to commuters and residents alike,” said Alok Kumar. “We are ready to be part of meeting called at the behest of Sunil Sharma, provided it addresses our core problems,” added Kumar. On Friday, traders had gathered outside Kumar’s Arihant Harmony residence, prompting the police to station a PCR van and a posse of cops.
