NOIDA: The transport department on Sunday suspended the driving licences of five vehicle owners for three months and released a video identifying them. Tiwari said the only way now to check for traffic violations is to scan the registration number of the vehicle. Anurag Kulshrestha, president of Road Safety NGO — TRAX — said the penalty for traffic violations in India is lower compared to that in foreign countries.“Most violators here do not have a sense of punishment. “There is no mechanism at present to check for violations using driving licences. We will take necessary action if someone approaches us and complains that their licences were unduly cancelled,” he said.

NOIDA: The transport department on Sunday suspended the driving licences of five vehicle owners for three months and released a video identifying them. The vehicles of these people had been caught on camera speeding for at least five times on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. However, it is not clear if the owners, whose licences were cancelled, were on the driver’s seat at that time. The action was taken after the vehicle owners ignored repeated notices sent to them and refused to pay the fine. ARTO (enforcement) Himesh Tiwari said: “Some motorists just hurtle their vehicles on the expressway and ignore notices and fines sent to them. The traffic police shared with us a list of five repeated offenders. We have suspended their driving licences for three months,” he said. The violators whose licences were cancelled are Udayan Vashisht of Sector 40, Vivek Sharma from Sector 49, Dheeraj Kumar of Sector 11, and Vikas Awana and Ramendra Singh of Harolla village. The transport department has also urged people to inform it if the five are found driving in the period that their licences stay cancelled. The transport department, however, could identify the vehicle owners only through the registration numbers.Currently, the Noida traffic police or the transport department does not have the mechanism or driving licence readers to know if a man caught speeding has past records of violations. Tiwari said the only way now to check for traffic violations is to scan the registration number of the vehicle. “There is no mechanism at present to check for violations using driving licences. For these five offenders, we had served notices to them but they did not turn up. We will take necessary action if someone approaches us and complains that their licences were unduly cancelled,” he said. Anurag Kulshrestha, president of Road Safety NGO — TRAX — said the penalty for traffic violations in India is lower compared to that in foreign countries.“Most violators here do not have a sense of punishment. They feel they can easily pay the fine for violations and escape. This name and shame initiative will be able to build social pressure, and it can yield good results to bring down traffic violations,” he said. This year, the transport department has suspended over 715 driving licences for reasons such as speeding, overloading, signal jumping, using mobile phone while driving, etc.
