The first of the weekly ‘haat’ this Sunday was inaugurated by Noida Authority CEO Alok Tandon.Green Crusaders came up with the idea of promoting healthy food habits after their initiative to manage waste through their own compost machine was a success. Devyani Vohra, a member of the women’s group, said: “We contacted some organic food vendors and organised this weekly market. The response was good, a large number of people shopped here,” she said.PPS Nagar, the Sector 47 RWA president, said none of the items displayed on Sunday had been grown using chemical fertilisers. “In conventional farming, chemicals and pesticides are highly used to manage weeds and insects. In organic farming, natural fertilisers, such as manure or compost, are used to feed soil and plants. Organic farmers rotate crops to manage weed, instead of using chemicals,” he said. Among the sellers was Sonia Jabbar, who grows organic tea in Darjeeling. “I had displayed and sold organic tea products in Delhi. This time, I was invited to put up a stall in Noida. It was a good and enriching experience as some people interacted with me and also bought my products,” she said.
