Ghaziabad: The Dilshad Garden-New Bus Stand metro route is unlikely to start functioning before January or February 2019 because of several roadblocks that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is facing, prime among them is an approval to the project from the Union cabinet that will pave the way for the Centre’s share of Rs 329 crore. The route was earlier expected to be flagged off on December 25. Work on it gained momentum after the UP government sought to know from the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) the progress of work and vice-chairperson Kanchan Verma assured them the project would be completed by the end of this month.TOI visited the New Bus Stand station and spoke to officials on how the work was progressing on the ground. “Work on the ticket counter is well in place while escalators and lifts have been installed. The foot overbridge, too, is being installed,” an official said. “We have also installed gate barriers along with sign boards,” he added. What is delaying the progress of the project is the construction of emergency exits, agreed officials. “This is true for all the eight stations on the route. The drop-way will be between 30m and 100m wide. At three stations, Arthala, Shyam Park and New Bus Stand, the parking lot has not been developed fully,” said VN Singh, chief engineer, GDA.Apart from the construction hurdles, the project is also awaiting an approval from the Union cabinet. The cabinet’s nod will pave way for the Centre’s share of Rs 329 crore for the project.Asked about the progress in getting a nod, Singh a note from the Public Investment Board had already been circulated to four central government departments, but an approval still eludes the project.
