GHAZIABAD: Police stations in Ghaziabad will soon be freed from scrapped vehicles. A visible change will appear at police stations in the next couple of months,” said the SP (city). However, till the time such a facility comes up, we have the option of auctioning such vehicles after seeking the court’s order. At many police stations, more than 50% of the space has been occupied by vehicles seized either during checking drives or are case properties in criminal cases.SP (city) Shlok Kumar, who is monitoring the auctioning of scrapped vehicles, said that recently 129 vehicles were auctioned from Khoda police station and around 30 vehicles would soon be removed from Indirapuram police station. The reclaimed space will be used for developing gardens or for constructing sports facilities.According to an estimate, there are over 1,500 unclaimed vehicles parked at 16 police stations in the district.A large number of abandoned or impounded cars and bikes, often covered in dust and ruins and lying in a heap, jostle for space on the premises, giving the impression of a junkyard.

This situation is grim at Indirapuram, Kavi Nagar, Sahibabad and Vijay Nagar where many vehicles are found parked on roadsides as well as in green belts. The problem has been compounded by the regional transport department (RTO), which does not have a space of its own and park vehicles at police stations after seizing them during checking drives.Transport department officials said that even under the rules, they are supposed to hand over the vehicles to the nearest police stations after issuing seizure memos to the owners.Cops said keeping an eye of this pileup is a big headache for them, as miscreants are always on the lookout to steal stereos, tyres and other valuable parts from these vehicles. They added that most of the vehicles are either recovered from criminals involved in vehicle thefts or involved in road accidents.“In a large number of cases the vehicle owners do not turn up to collect their properties even after court orders, especially in road accident cases,” said an SHO.“There is a proposal to develop a scrap yard by the district administration so that the seized and impounded vehicles can be kept there instead of police stations. However, till the time such a facility comes up, we have the option of auctioning such vehicles after seeking the court’s order. A visible change will appear at police stations in the next couple of months,” said the SP (city).
