NEW DELHI: The CBSE will, from 2020, give students the choice of appearing in either the basic or standard version of the maths exam during the Class X boards.“It is well known that students experience greatest stress before and during their most ‘difficult’ subject exam,” the CBSE said in a statement on Friday.There have been protests over mathematics papers in board exams in the past.Students can choose the level at the time of the online submission of the List of Candidates by affiliated schools to the board from 2020. However, the choice will not be applicable for the internal assessment for Class X or in the exam of Class IX.“The syllabus, classroom teaching and internal assessment for both levels would remain the same, so that the students get an opportunity to study the whole range of topics and are able to decide on the level depending upon their aptitude and abilities,” the statement stated. The Basic Mathematics would be an easier option. If a student fails at any level, he/she can appear for the compartmental exam. For a student who has opted for Standard Mathematics and fails, he/she can either sit for the same or appear for Basic Mathematics.Students, parents and principals welcomed the decision. Many principals of government schools stated that it would help because many students had failed in mathematics in board exams last year.“It is a good move for students. It will benefit those students who find mathematics difficult. In government schools, most students fail in mathematics. So, the choice is a step in the right direction,” the principal of a government school in Rohini, said.“I neither like mathematics, nor want to study further. So I am happy that when I give my board exam, I will be able to make a choice. Every year it is mathematics which brings down my marks,” said Dipanita Parashar, a Class IX student of a private school in Delhi.
