GHAZIABAD: A group of residents, led by a local councillor , stopped trucks of the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) from carrying waste to the Pratap Vihar landfill on Wednesday. They cited the National Green Tribunal’s deadline banning dumping of waste at Pratap Vihar after January 15.The GMC said it was the NGT’s, and not the residents’, discretion to stop waste trucks from going to Pratap Vihar. They said an appeal by the civic body to extend the deadline by a fortnight was already under consideration. An NGT committee will take a call on the request on January 18.On Wednesday, the protesters, led by Hazi Asif Chowdhury, the councillor of Ward 48, stopped nearly a dozen trucks.“The NGT committee’s deadline to stop dumping of civic waste at Pratap Vihar ended on Tuesday. Why is the GMC then trying to dump waste even after that? So, we did not allow any of the trucks to take waste there,” said Chowdhary. “In keeping with the committee’s order, we will not allow any garbage dumping at Pratap Vihar and keep protesting until the GMC stops it completely,” he added. The GMC sought to remind the protesters about the extension it has sought. “Ever since the committee issued the deadline, we have been doing all we could do to ensure its compliance,” municipal commissioner CP Singh said. “We have also sought extension of the deadline. In my opinion, it is the committee alone which can take cognisance of the matter and not anybody else,” Singh added. He claimed that the trucks were ferrying waste to be turned into compost at the Pratap Vihar plant and not for dumping it.The Ghaziabad Development Authority is in the final stages of acquiring land to set up a waste-to-energy plant at Galand, its alternative site. After the land is acquired, it needs to be registered by GMC.“It’s only a matter of time before the site is ready. That’s why we sought this breathing,” said AK Mishra, GMC’s coordinator for the Swachh Bharat mission.
