NEW DELHI: After a delay of almost 16 months, the flyover on Noida Link Road near Mayur Vihar Phase-I is set to be thrown open to the public in the next few days by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. Public works department officials said they have sent a letter confirming the completion of the project to Delhi Secretariat Work on the flyover, which is a part of the Barapullah Phase-III project, had started in April 2015 and it was to start functioning by September 2017. However, it got delayed due to several hindrances. The 1km flyover, built at a cost of Rs 50 crore, will make the entire stretch signal-free.While the flyover’s work was almost complete by mid-2018, the construction of two loops going towards Mayur Vihar-I delayed its inauguration. Apart from technical glitches, land acquisition issues, working under the metro line and shifting of high tension wires also delayed the project.Even after the flyover is opened, the work on the two loops, the deadline for which is May 2019, will continue without disruptions, said a senior PWD official.Ever since the construction started, unending traffic jams have made this area a major chokepoint. To avoid the snarls, commuters have to take long detours. The snarls in the area were further compounded by two-wheeler riders and cyclists travelling on the wrong side to avoid taking a long detour. The flyover will end the woes of commuters travelling from Noida towards Akshardham and Mayur Vihar-I as the signal that currently controls the flow of traffic will be removed, thus making the corridor signal-free, said an official.“At present, there is heavy traffic at the Mayur Vihar-I junction and it takes 20-25 minutes for people to cross that area. To avoid getting stuck in a jam, commuters end up taking other routes. Due to the construction work, a part of the traffic also needs to be diverted,” said a PWD official.Officials said that before this flyover was conceptualised, there was just a single-carriageway flyover at this junction that allowed traffic from Akshardham going towards Noida to bypass the signal. In all, there are three flyovers on Noida Link Road.PWD officials said that after the completion of Barapullah Phase-III, travel time between Mayur Vihar and Aurobindo Marg in south Delhi will come down to 15-20 minutes from the current 60-90 minutes.
