Forest department officials who later visited the spot claimed the animal was a fishing cat, which feeds primarily on fishes. It was listed as ‘vulnerable’ on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List in 2016. “The animal is harmless because it is not a man-eater,” said district forest officer P K Shrivastava. However, Anand Arya, a wildlife expert, said the animal resembled a leopard cat, a wild cat which feeds on small mammals.
