Water level higher, 4,000 more birds at Okhla this month

Nearly 20,000 migratory birds have been spotted at Okhla bird sanctuary in the past two weeks, making it a delight for many.According to officials of forest department, 4 ,000 more birds arrived this month compared to January last year. While many birds visit the sanctuary, it is the level of water and conducive habitat that decides whether they would stay back through the season,” Srivastava said.The forest department has registered 65 visiting species in the sanctuary this month. “Last year, there were 15,000 to 16,000 birds around this time. Nearly 20,000 migratory birds have been spotted at Okhla bird sanctuary in the past two weeks, making it a delight for many.According to officials of forest department, 4 ,000 more birds arrived this month compared to January last year. “Last year, there were 15,000 to 16,000 birds around this time. The water level is better this year and we have done some habitat building which has retained more birds than last year,” district forest officer, Gautam Budh Nagar, P K Srivastava said.The forest department said they have built 10 platforms, four mounts and four sitting or perching places for birds this year, which seem to have made a difference in retaining birds.“We created artificial support for birds to perch on. So more birds stayed back. While many birds visit the sanctuary, it is the level of water and conducive habitat that decides whether they would stay back through the season,” Srivastava said.The forest department has registered 65 visiting species in the sanctuary this month. Some bird varieties to look for at the Okhla sanctuary are European hobbies, falcons, greater spotted eagle, lapwings, pochards, pelicans and flamingos.The other birds which are common to the sanctuary during the migratory season are also spotted.Some bird species which can be spotted this time are: marsh harriers, gull billed terns, pied avocets, common teals, comb ducks, gadwalls, northern shoveler, northern pintails, brown-headed gulls, black-headed gulls, peregrine falcons, black kites, Indian pond herons, common kingfishers, white-throated kingfishers, little cormorants, great cormorants, Indian cormorants, oriental darters, common pochard, tufted pochard, ferruginous duck, grey herons, purple herons, Asian open bills, painted forks, purple moorhen, purple swamphen, barn swallows and mountain swifts.The migratory season at the bird park lasts till the end of March.
