We are bidding for the luxury hotel in Pragati Maidan that will have between 600 and 700 rooms. NEW DELHI: Tata Group’s Taj Hotels is on a major expansion spree in Delhi. “The vision for Taj Mansingh is simple — to be the leader in Lutyens’ and position it higher than anyone in a 3km radius (that includes names like Oberoi, Lodhi, Meridien). It will recreate the magic when Mansingh became the talk of the town when it opened in 1978,” he said. The famed walls and lobby of the hotel will not be changed.

NEW DELHI: Tata Group’s Taj Hotels is on a major expansion spree in Delhi. It is bidding for the five-star luxury hotel to be built at Pragati Maidan , for which the Indian Trade Promotion Organisation had last month invited offers. With a reserve price of Rs 611 crore, the proposed hotel — to be built over 3.7 acres — will be one of the biggest in the capital in terms of number of rooms. The latest bid of Tata’s Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) comes after it recently won the rights to manage the Connaught in CP and got the lease of the iconic Taj Mansingh for another 33 years. In an exclusive interview to TOI on Friday, IHCL’s MD & CEO Puneet Chhatwal said the group was looking for more opportunities in Delhi.“If any property was to become available in the heart of Delhi, one can expect us to be an interested party. We are bidding for the luxury hotel in Pragati Maidan that will have between 600 and 700 rooms. The Connaught is being revamped at a cost of Rs 80 crore and will open as our SeleQtions brand by the end of this year or early 2020,” Chhatwal said. The hospitality major’s focus is on renovating the its Delhi flagship — Taj Mansingh. Presentations were made to Chhatwal on Friday morning about the same and the blueprint is going to be finalised in about a month.Unlike the nearby Oberoi that was closed for 21 months for Rs 600-crore renovation, Taj Mansingh will continue to remain operational when the work is on. “The vision for Taj Mansingh is simple — to be the leader in Lutyens’ and position it higher than anyone in a 3km radius (that includes names like Oberoi, Lodhi, Meridien). We will spend what is needed to take it to that level, which should be equal to about one year of revenue from here. We will seek clearances for the changes that may need to be made (from NDMC),” he said. The famed walls and lobby of the hotel will not be changed. “This is very iconic. It will recreate the magic when Mansingh became the talk of the town when it opened in 1978,” he said.
