Sameer, who was apparently under the influence of alcohol, kicked the machine when his debit card got stuck and did not come out despite repeated attempts. As the front portion of the machine came off, people who were waiting for their turn to withdraw cash suspected something amiss and informed police. They later said they thought Sameer was planning the break the machine and steal cash.Officials pointed out that new ATMs require cards to be kept in the slot for the duration that the transaction takes place.Police said Sameer, who stays in a paying guest facility in Sector 66, has been undergoing coaching for a job in the Merchant Navy in Mumbai.A resident of Dehradun, Sameer had gone to the nearby ATM kiosk to withdraw some cash.He claimed before police that his debit card got stuck in the machine and he tried his best to retrieve the card, but to no avail. He said that when the debit card did not come out despite repeated attempts, he kicked the ATM, causing the lower part of the cash dispenser to break. However, other customers who were waiting in the queue to withdraw cash caught hold of Sameer and handed him over to police. The youth was taken into the custody of a police team that arrived soon after.Though Sameer has been detained, police have not lodged an FIR against him.
