Ghaziabad: A 70-year-old retired police inspector was lured into a car in the name of giving him a ride home to Meerut and robbed of his debit card, mobile phone and Rs 15,000 by a gang of four in Mohan Nagar on Thursday morning.The robbers, who were armed, hit the former cop on the head with the butt of a gun and drove around the city for more than half an hour before dumping him at a secluded place.Rampal Singh, a resident of Meerut’s Mansarovar Colony, was returning home in a roadways bus on Wednesday night after appearing in a court case in Mainpuri. He got down at Mohan Nagar T-point around 1am and was looking for public transport to go further. He was told that the next bus would be available only at 4am.“Even as he was planning how to reach home, a grey car stopped near him. There were four persons inside and they were shouting for passengers to Meerut. My husband, finding no other means of transport, sat inside. After some distance, the people inside pounced on him and started beating him up,” Singh’s wife Naina said.The gang took his mobile phone and Rs 15,000 in cash. They also snatched his debit card and clicked photos of it. The victim was asked for the PIN. When the number he divulged was found to be wrong, Singh was hit on the head with the butt of a gun. Singh was dropped in a secluded area, but not before the SIM cards of his phone were removed. Circle officer (Sahibabad) RK Mishra said efforts were being made to collect CCTV footage of the crime. An FIR will be lodged.
