Lok sabha polls 2019: BJP gives ticket to Mahesh Sharma in Gautam Budh Nagar

NOIDA: Gautam Budh Nagar MP and Union minister Mahesh Sharma on Thursday received BJP ticket to contest from Gautam Budh Nagar Lok Sabha Constituency. He started his political journey as a party worker and was fielded as a Lok Sabha candidate from Gautam Budh Nagar in 2009. This time he received 77226 votes (36.87%) and defeated BSP’s Omdutt Sharma who had bagged 49582 votes (23.67%).The assembly election win strengthened Sharma and he was again fielded in the 2014 Lok Sabha. Sharma is considered the strongest candidate than his rival Congress’ Arvind Kumar Singh and SP-BSP alliance Satveer Nagar in Gautam Budh Nagar.“Yes, I have received ticket from Party,” he told TOI.Sharma, a native of Rajasthan’s Alwar district, had shifted his base in Noida two decades ago. However, Sharma stood second bagging 2.29 lakh votes against BSP’s Surendra Nagar , who was polled 2.45 lakh votes and won the election.But Sharma continued his political struggle and he was fielded in the 2012 Noida assembly alection.

This time he received 77226 votes (36.87%) and defeated BSP’s Omdutt Sharma who had bagged 49582 votes (23.67%).The assembly election win strengthened Sharma and he was again fielded in the 2014 Lok Sabha. This time Sharma, riding the Modi wave, was voted 5,99,702 and defeated Samajwadi Party’s Narendra Bhati, who was voted 3,19,490.He rose to greater heights when in November 2014, he was appointed as the minister of state (independent charge) for Culture and Tourism in Narendra Modi’s cabinet.While his detractors alleged he is not approachable and had not done significant development works in rural areas, Sharma claims credit for the Jewar International Airport, Noida metros, Botanic Garden Multi-Level Parking, Thermal Power Plant in Khurja, etc. He has also spent around Rs 15 crore in development of roads, sewage system, fixing electric wires, etc in over 100 villages in the district from MPLADS.
