Greater Noida: Police think Brajpal Singh can influence the Lok Sabha elections and disturb peace in the area. The irony, however, will not be lost on the cops when they realise that Singh died two years ago.Like Singh, bond notices have been issued to several elderly men whose names have never figured in police records earlier. The district administration said it was done “inadvertently” and the names would be corrected. But the move brings to fore the slack verification by police before issuing such notices. On Monday, a group of senior citizens visited the collectorate and demanded that the administration clear their names. Sources said most got the notices — in two phases over February and March — after Kasna police randomly asked a social activist to share names of those he thought were “politically active” in the locality.Sunita Nagar, Bhagwat Ram, Brajpal Singh and Bijendra Singh — who are among those issued the notices in the first phase in February — are either former or current members of the Sector 37 RWA in Greater Noida. The notices, issued from the SDM Sadar’s office, say they are based on a tussle that the RWA members had had with a group of people over the construction of a temple. In the notices, the four have been asked to furnish a bond of Rs 50,000 each, failing which action will be taken against them. Devraj Bhati, a local resident, said the police had simply taken the names from the RWA’s old letterhead.“Otherwise, how do you explain the name of Brajpal Singh (who was the then RWA treasurer)? He died two years ago,” he said. The notices have been issued under Section 107/116 of the CrPc, which allows the administration to send out bonds against people it thinks could pose a threat to peace.Ranvir Pradhan (73), a retired school teacher in Sector Beta 1 and one of those who received the notice, said: “I have taught students all my life. I am a law abiding citizen. Two policemen served me a bond notice and told me to appear before the SDM.” RP Katariya (72), who was in the central government, said the notice had taken a toll on his mental health. Some young students and businessmen have also been named in the bond notices. District magistrate BN Singh said he would look into the matter and clear the names that have been added “inadvertently”.Circle officer Shwetabh Pandey said: “There is no age limit to this. But we have received the application and are reviewing the names to make necessary corrections.”
