NOIDA: Pollution, a year-long concern in Delhi-NCR, is making it to election manifestos. The big two, BJP and Congress , are both promising to work on solutions to ask for votes. It’s a problem that needs long-term solutions and that can only happen when there is political will.On Thursday, Union minister and BJP’s Noida candidate Mahesh Sharma said that if he was re-elected, he would solve the pollution issue once and for all. He said he had served as the minister of state for environment, forest and climate change for one and a half years and would use his knowledge to look for solutions.“I take this issue as a priority. I know the problem and will solve it. I have already roped in a professional agency to conduct a study on Noida’s pollution. They are preparing a report and will it submit soon,” he said.Sharma said he also wanted to replicate in Noida the Taj Trapezium Zone, a defined area of 10,400sqkm around the Taj Mahal to protect the monument from pollution. The minister also called for crop residue burning to be banned and claimed that since he is a doctor, he understands the issue better.Sharma also plans to address the traffic problem, which adds to pollution. He said that at present, officials randomly placed dividers to divert traffic, which often caused jams rather than helping solve them.“We will hire an expert agency like RITES to conduct a study of Noida’s traffic. Based on the findings, we will take necessary measures,” he said.Congress’s Arvind Kumar Singh, a post-graduate from the University of Leeds, sought to change the construction model in Noida, which, he felt, was the major cause of pollution.Citing examples of construction norms in developed countries, Singh said he, too, would form a committee to devise ways on how to solve the issue. Singh said there were various factors that aided pollution in Noida and Greater Noida.“There are thermal power plants that cause emission. Then there are traditional ways of construction and development. We use bricks, plastic and sand, etc. and they spread in the air and add to pollution. I have found that in developed countries, they use pre-fabricated structures like readymade slabs that are fixed to steel structures. This new technology does not create any pollution and the building is developed smoothly,” he said.He claimed that he would introduce similar measures to check pollution in other sectors. Singh said farmers needed to be helped with technology to efficiently grow crops and dispose of the residue. He has also incorporated a “pollution free” city in his manifesto. For several days in December, the district administration had issued a ban on constructions. But it was seen that several builders continued with constructions under the garb of darkness at night.
