Yamuna Expressway accident: Return journey from wedding breaks a family

All five were asleep when the sleeper bus hit the truck on the expressway.“I was coming back home to Kulesra village in Noida after staying in my parents’ house for about 15 days. The most difficult thing for me now is to tell my daughters that Suman is never coming back,” said Santosh Kumar, Suman’s husband.They got married around 20 years back. Their youngest daughter is two years old and the two others are 13 and five years old. Both Suman and Santosh worked at a factory in Sector 82 as helpers.Santosh said they were supposed to resume work from Friday.“We had gone home around 15 days ago to attend a wedding. But we stayed back for a longer time because my mother fell ill. On Thursday, we planned our journey back to Noida since we had to join work. We were sleeping in our seats that were in the middle of the bus when suddenly there was a collision and I lost consciousness,” he said.“ Later, I found that the reality had changed for me. I am left with three daughters who I have to raise. I am thinking about the future and the thoughts are haunting me,” he added.Mohammad Jahangir (38), who is a motor mechanic and is from Auraiyya district, spoke about his 13-year-old son who he lost in the accident. “I was taking him to Delhi where he was going to be operated upon for a fracture in the leg,” he said.Ram Nivas Singh, an executive from Bhagwati Travels that owned the bus, told TOI that Mahesh Kumar, who was driving the bus, was an experienced driver and he has been in the same job for the past eight years.“He was one of the most trustworthy drivers. I cannot believe that he died in such an unfortunate accident. He was skilled and also had experience in driving trucks. He is survived by his parents, wife and two daughters,” said Ram Nivas.Meanwhile, the district magistrate (DM) has announce Rs 2 lakh as compensation to each family of the deceased.“The accident shook me completely. I visited the injured patients and also met the families of the deceased. The administration will offer Rs 2 lakh as compensation to each family of the deceased,” said B N Singh, the DM of Gautam Budh Nagar.
