Mohali: Chris Gayle on Saturday became the first cricketer in Indian Premier League history to smash 300 sixes in the tournament. He was dismissed for a 24-ball 40 and now has 302 sixes in the IPL from 115 matches. Gayle is already the leading six-hitter in the IPL and needed just two more to reach 300 sixes before KXIP`s first home game against Mumbai Indians at the IS Bindra stadium in Mohali. No one is anywhere near Chris Gayle in the six-hitting business in the IPL. Ab de Villiers is second in the list with 192 sixes while Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni is third with 187 sixes. Suresh Raina of CSK is fourth with 186 sixes and Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is fifth with 185 sixes.

Before the start of this game, Gayle had scored 4093 runs from 114 matches at an average of 41.34 with six hundreds and 25 half-centuries. Gayle has been in superb form with the bat and is the sixth highest run-scorer this season after two games with 99 runs. He had smashed 79 in the first match against Rajasthan Royals, a match in which he also won the man-of-the-match award. During that knock, Gayle had also broken David Warner`s record to become the fastest player to reach 4000 runs in the Indian Premier League. Warner, who plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad, reached the milestone in his 114th innings and became the first overseas player to get to 4000 IPL runs. Gayle stormed to 4000 runs in his 112th innings and 113th match.

Chris Gayle is the second overseas player after Warner to join the elite club. AB de Villiers became the third non-Indian batsman to enter the 4000 club in the match against Mumbai Indians on Thursday. Overall, 10 batsmen have scored more than 4000 runs in the IPL. Three years ago, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli became the first player to reach the milestone in the IPL. He`s somebody who`s just been so destructive. It`s so important to have somebody that destructive and to have someone with that kind of talent and experience. That whole package is the best for a team to have," Gayle`s opening partner at Kings XI Punjab, KL Rahul, told  a couple of days ago.

"A lot of players in the IPL are destructive but they don`t have that kind of experience and don`t know how to use it but to have Chris, who has played so much cricket around the world... To have somebody like that is so useful to the youngsters and for me to just learn from him and pick his brains on how he has carried on his cricket for the last 15-20 years," Rahul added.
