NOIDA: Sixteen people, including five women, were arrested by UP special task force and Noida police on Saturday for allegedly cheating US citizens from a call centre in Sector 3, police said on Monday. The main accused, Nitin Srivastava, is still at large. The suspects stole details like social security numbers of the US citizens to cheat them, said police. The call centre came under the lens after a US citizen filed a complaint, saying his money from a Bank of America account was transferred to an HSBC account in Hong Kong with links to Noida. A police investigation revealed the transfer was linked to the Sector 3 call centre. Police said the suspects bought personal information of US citizens — name, address, phone number, and social security number — from the dark web. They would then trace the targets service providers, using a site. Next, the suspects would call their targets, pretending to be representatives of their service provider and obtain their PINs. They later called the service provider and booked a new phone using the targets details. An agent in the US received the new phones that came with a SIM card and subsequently sold them. With the details, the suspects transferred money from their targets bank accounts into their accounts. While Nitin is absconding, police nabbed the second-in-command, Divya Sharma, a DU history graduate. She told the police she met Nitin through her father; they worked in the same business. Nitin earlier ran another call centre, she claimed.Cops raided the call centre and seized a car, 18 phones, 26 computer sets (monitors, CPUs, keyboards, and headphones), 17 original and fake US driving licences, 27 phone order data sheets of US citizens, 10 pages of calling data, and 20 credit cards. The suspects have been booked under IPC sections 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and 34 (common intention), and Section 66D (cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the IT Act, 2000.
