Greater Noida: The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority on Monday said that it is planning to set up a civil aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility near the upcoming Noida International Airport , the site for which was approved by the ministry of civil aviation on Friday. With the growth of domestic and international traffic, the project will prove to be a revenue churner for the region, said YEIDA officials.Speaking to TOI, Prabhat Kumar, chairperson, YEIDA, who also holds charge as divisional commissioner, Meerut, said the MROs located in other places like Nagpur and Hyderabad have so far been unsuccessful. "Most of the Indian carriers go abroad to countries like Sri Lanka, Singapore and the UAE for their maintenance, repair and overhaul as they offer cheaper services than those in India," Kumar said."With a facility like that in place near the airport at Jewar , we will be able to woo Indian carriers as the MRO will save these carriers' time and cost in ferrying their aircraft abroad," he added.Further explaining what an MRO entails, the official said the job of an airline maintenance company is to carry out periodic checks on the frame, engine and components of an aircraft."The checks are required to ensure the airworthiness of an aircraft, and need to be carried out after the aircraft has completed a certain number of flying hours," Kumar said."The location of the international airport at Jewar is ideally suited for this project as we have the land and proximity to Delhi & Mumbai will add to the facility. Not only will this MRO facility result in additional jobs, but also boost indirect tax collections," he added.
