GAYA: First class judicial magistrate Swati Singh on Monday recorded the statements of the survivors of the gang rape case under Section 164 of the CRPC. Gaya SSP Rajiv Mishra said all the culprits have been identified and three of the accused have been sent to custody. Refusing to share the details, he said, “About half- a-dozen police teams are conducting raids to nab the other six culprits involved in the crime. The details will be shared at an appropriate time.”It may be mentioned here that the victims, a 45-year-old woman and her 14-year-old daughter were allegedly gang-raped in Konch police station area in Gaya last Wednesday evening. The family was going from Guraru to their native village (name withheld) on a bike when they were waylaid by a group of nine criminals. The criminals snatched Rs 2,000 and jewellery from them before tying the woman’s husband with a rope. The man watched in helplessness as three of the criminals took turns to sexually assault his wife and daughter, a police officer said and added the criminals then escaped. The same gang had earlier robbed two other bikers passing through the area. The duo had also been tied with a rope and they too witnessed the ghastly crime.Investigation has brought into light the shortcomings of local- policing and the virtually non- functional chowkidari system, which, at one point of time, was regarded as the most effective system of intelligence gathering, said sources.Meanwhile, civil society activists have demanded rehabilitation of the victim. According to Prof Arun Kumar Prasad, “Giving proper and quality education to the teenage victim would be the best way to rehabilitate her and in this connection philanthropists should come forward. Education will empower the village girl in true sense. In her statement, the victim has shown resilience and determination to leave the trauma behind.”Conceding the need for the victim’s rehabilitation, the Magadh range DIG Vinay Kumar said everything possible would be done to rehabilitate her.
