University teachers go on warpath

The letter writing commenced on July 1 and will end on July 15.According to Federation of University Teachers’ Associations of Bihar (Futab) working president Kanhaiya Bahadur Sinha and general secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, MLC, the All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations (Aifucto) has given a call for teachers’ dharna at the state headquarters on July 19. They also criticized the attack on university autonomy in the name of education reforms. Aifucto zonal secretary Ashok Kumar Singh has appealed to the university and college teachers to participate in the stir in large numbers.Aifucto and Futab leaders have expressed concern over the reported dilly-dallying tactics adopted by the government in implementing the seventh revised payscales. However, the teachers from Bihar will stage a dharna in front of the state legislature on July 23 since the session of the legislature is scheduled from July 20 to 26.The teachers will remain on mass casual leave and stage a massive demonstration before Parliament in New Delhi on August 3. The recent move to scrap the UGC and constitute a commission on higher education will prove counterproductive, they said.At the state level, they said, the state government has been usurping all the powers of the universities. Payment of salaries through government treasury and handing over the job of admission of students in colleges to the Bihar School Examination Board are a mockery of the autonomy of universities, they said.
