Government to prepare road map for airportsrsquo development

AAI officials said the proposed terminal building would be temporary and mostly pre-fabricated structure. Officials in civil aviation directorate said the airstrips at Bhagalpur, Kishanganj, Birpur, Valmiki Nagar, Rajgir and Gopalganj are also proposed to be developed under the Udan scheme. Regional flights are proposed from Darbhanga to places like Delhi and Mumbai under the Centre’s Udan scheme.Jayant talked about such plans through his official Twitter handle.

PATNA: Union civil aviation ministry has asked the state government to prepare a road map entailing short, medium and long- term civil aviation operations in Bihar, Patna airport director Rajender Singh Lahauria told TOI on Monday. Talks in this regard were held between Airports Authority of India (AAI) and state government officials in Delhi on July 9.Union minister of state for civil aviation Jayant Sinha on Saturday claimed a comprehensive plan was being prepared for development of all airports and airstrips in Bihar and Darbhanga airport would be made functional at the earliest. Regional flights are proposed from Darbhanga to places like Delhi and Mumbai under the Centre’s Udan scheme.Jayant talked about such plans through his official Twitter handle. On Darbhanga airport, Jayant tweeted: “Please be assured that we are working to get Darbhanga airport ready as quickly as possible. I am personally reviewing the progress.”There are 21 airfields in Bihar out of which three at Bihta, Purnia and Darbhanga are under the Indian Air Force control. Nine others, including at Jehanabad and Ara, are in the category of ‘kachcha and abandoned’ airfields. The others are under the category of metalled runways having reinforced cement concrete-made airstrips.AAI is working on a plan for the development of a new terminal building at Darbhanga. AAI officials said the proposed terminal building would be temporary and mostly pre-fabricated structure. A civil enclave or terminal building along with ATC (air traffic control) tower, parking apron and cargo among other facilities are required at Darbhanga for commercial flight operations.Earlier, low cost airline SpiceJet was awarded a letter in January to operate flights from Darbhanga to Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai under the Udan scheme.Ude desh ka aam nagrik (Udan) scheme is to connect unserved and underserved airports with fare cap at Rs2,500 for one-hour flight. Officials in civil aviation directorate said the airstrips at Bhagalpur, Kishanganj, Birpur, Valmiki Nagar, Rajgir and Gopalganj are also proposed to be developed under the Udan scheme.
