  • | Sunday | 22nd July, 2018

The dharna will be offered at the Gardanibagh dharna spot from 11am to 3pm.The call for the agitation has been given jointly by the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations of Bihar (Futab) and the Federation of University Service Teachers’ Associations of Bihar (Fustab). PATNA: Bihar’s college and university teachers will stage a daylong dharna and demonstration in front of the state legislature in Patna on Monday to press for the implementation of the seventh revised UGC payscales and other long-pending demands. The teachers have also decided to go on mass casual leave and participate in the dharna to be offered by the university teachers from all over the country before the Parliament on August3 at the call of the All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations (Aifucto).Expressing resentment over the delay in implementation of revised payscales, Futab leaders Kanhaiya Bahadur Sinha and Sanjay Kumar Singh, MLC, and Fustab leaders Ram Jatan Sinha and Dilip Kumar Chaudhary, MLC, said the ever-increasing bureaucratic control on higher education was proving counterproductive and was demoralizing the teaching community.By initiating payment of salaries through government treasuries, handing over the job of admission of students to the Bihar School Examination Board, introducing biometric attendance in universities and colleges and non-payment of salaries to the teachers and non-teaching staff of newly created universities for the last five months are pointers to a conspiracy to liquidate the system of higher education and malign the image of university teachers in the state, they alleged. They also flayed the recent move of the central government to scrap the UGC and create a new Higher Education Commission in its place “with the sole aim of stopping financial aid to the existing public universities and colleges and promoting the interest of private universities”.These leaders demanded immediate fulfilment of their demands, failing which the teachers would be compelled to launch a long drawn agitation.
