Two AK47 rifles found buried near Munger cemetery

PATNA: Munger police recovered two more AK-47 assault rifles buried underground near a cemetery at village Wardha under the Mufassil police station area on Friday. “During interrogation, Shamsher told us about assault rifles hidden in a village by the smugglers, who could not be arrested,” Baburam said.“Police started raids on suspected places like river banks, abandoned places, jungles and burial grounds in Wardha for recovering the assault rifles,” he said. “It was finally on Friday when police got to know about a woman, who was given the task to bury the AK-47s. Imran’s interrogation busted the massive arms smuggling racket from the Jabalpur COD. Imran had also told the police that one Purushottam Rajak had smuggled the rifles to Munger by train from Jabalpur.On that input, the Jabalpur police arrested Purushottam, a retired armourer of Indian Army , COD storekeeper Suresh Thakur and two others.

A total of eight AK-47 rifles have been sized so far from the district within a fortnight.The two rifles recovered on Friday are also suspected to have been smuggled from the Central Ordnance Depot (COD) at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.The Munger police launched a massive raid on Thursday to recover smuggled assault rifles from COD and also seized two country-made rifles from a village.Earlier, three AK-47s along with 30 magazines and spare parts like pistons, springs, recoil springs, body cover and breach locks were seized from Jubli Well locality under the Jamalpur police station area in Munger on August 29.Arms smuggler Mohammad Imran Alam was arrested while transporting the consignment. Imran’s interrogation busted the massive arms smuggling racket from the Jabalpur COD. Imran had also told the police that one Purushottam Rajak had smuggled the rifles to Munger by train from Jabalpur.On that input, the Jabalpur police arrested Purushottam, a retired armourer of Indian Army , COD storekeeper Suresh Thakur and two others. Purushottam’s interrogation resulted in the arrest of another arms smuggler Mohammad Shamsher from Wardha and police on September 6 seized three more AK-47 assault rifles smuggled from the COD.Munger SP (additional charge) Baburam said the two more AK-47s were recovered after the interrogation of Shamsher, who was taken on four days’ police remand. “During interrogation, Shamsher told us about assault rifles hidden in a village by the smugglers, who could not be arrested,” Baburam said.“Police started raids on suspected places like river banks, abandoned places, jungles and burial grounds in Wardha for recovering the assault rifles,” he said. “It was finally on Friday when police got to know about a woman, who was given the task to bury the AK-47s. The woman was quizzed leading to the recovery of two more AK-47s,” he said, adding further raids were going on in the village.Shamsher’s elder brother Niyazur Rahman, another retired Army personnel, was also arrested from Field Ammunition Depot of Indian Army at Bagdogra in West Bengal on September 8 for his involvement in the arms smuggling. He was posted there as a guard on contract.
