Criminals cut open 2 ATMs in Patna, steal Rs 42L

PATNA: Thumbing their nose at police, criminals looted altogether Rs 41.97 lakh after cutting open two ATMs with the help of a gas-cutting machine in the state capital on Wednesday-Thursday night. They also made an abortive bid to cut open yet another ATM.While a sum of Rs 34.33 lakh was stolen from the ATM of Union Bank of India at Beur Mor, another Rs 7.64 lakh was thieved from an ATM of Canara Bank at Saguna Mor. “But many ATM kiosks are located in secluded areas and, as such, it becomes difficult for the patrolling parties to spot suspicious activities near the kiosks,” he said. “It was the sweeper who first spotted the damaged ATM. He said now onwards bank officials would be held responsible for such thefts if they did not deploy guards at ATM kiosks.In response to a question, the DIG claimed police patrolling was not poor in the state capital.

The criminals also tried to cut open an ATM of Indian Overseas Bank at Gola Road, but did not succeed.On March 18 last year, a sum of Rs 12 lakh was stolen from the Union Bank of India ATM installed at the same Beur Mor kiosk which the criminals targeted on Wednesday-Thursday night.The Canara Bank ATM was installed on the first floor of a building in which its Saguna Mor branch is housed. “It was the sweeper who first spotted the damaged ATM. On reaching the kiosk around 9.30am, the sweeper had initially found the shutters down whereas the kiosk is normally open 24X7,” Canara Bank’s Saguna Mor branch manager Sanjay Kumar Sudhanshu told newsmen on Friday and added the kiosk didn’t have any guard deployed in it.He said the bank was shut for two days on Tuesday and Wednesday for Chhath and reopened on Thursday. “Initial CCTV footage shows four suspects arriving at the kiosk in an SUV and dismantling all the CCTV wires,” Sudhanshu said.A little earlier, the criminals used a gas cutter to cut open the ATM of Union Bank of India at Beur Mor and decamped with Rs 34.33 lakh.While SSP Manu Maharaaj did not take TOI’s calls, City SP (central) D Amarkesh said details could not be shared with the media as investigations were on.DIG (central range) Rajesh Kumar said police would soon crack down on the gang.
