Earlier, it was 1200 metres till Friday. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) in this regard. Two additional approach or tarmac lights have been installed inside Patna zoo and one on the median of Peer Ali Marg (airport road). ALS, which has high-intensity lights, guide the pilot to establish visual contact with the runway while landing an aircraft. Till Friday, ALS were functional on the stretch of 210 metres ahead of the runway on the airport premises.“We got the approval for commissioning the additional approach lights from Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday evening,” JPNI airport director Rajender Singh Lahauria said.Explaining how the additional tarmac lights would reduce the runway visual range (RVR) for flight operations at Patna airport , Lahauria said: “The ALS were installed on a stretch of 210 metres prior to the runway as the airport road comes immediately after it, followed by Patna zoo. Functioning of additional approach lights beyond the boundary wall of the airport has resolved this issue.”Flight operations in the recent years have been frequently affected during cloudy and foggy conditions due to short runway and the tarmac lights. Keeping it into consideration, the AAI reduced the minimum visibility requirement for flight operations from 1,600 metres to 1,200m in 2013.Despite the relaxation in visibility criterion, very few flights were able to land here before 9am in peak winter season. Accordingly, the AAI in 2015 installed additional approach lights on the airport road and inside Patna zoo after taking permission from the state environment and forest department and road construction department.Lahauria said the operation of additional approach lights started after completing the prerequisites, including necessary testing.
