While 19 toppers got gold medals from governor-cum-chancellor Lalji Tandon and education minister Krishna Nandan Prasad Verma, the remaining seven received them from representatives of the donors of gold medals.Toppers of different subjects, who got gold medals at the convocation, include Kumari Monika (economics), Priya Kumari (geography), Chandan Kumar Barhai and Mahumita Kumari (Hindi), Pratibha Singh (history), Ganesh Chandra Gupta (Magahi), Kanchan Kumari (political science), Priyanka Srivastava (psychology), Priti Roy (sociology), Komal Rani (MJMC), Priti Singh (public administration), Geeta Kumari (rural development), Rajani Kumari (commerce), Rajesh Kumar (Bhojpuri), Talat Yasmin (education), Md Maroof Alam (Urdu), Kamal Nath Jha (chemistry), Vansha Singh (botany), Rinku Kumari (zoology), Shahana Parween (physics), Ayushi Singh (mathematics), Deepshikha ( environmental science ), Himadri Sharma (Sanskrit), Prabhas Kumar (Maithili), Anubha Bharti (MLIS), and Komal Sinha (MCA).Mathematics topper Ayushi Singh and BCom topper Sneha Kumari were awarded gold medals for being the best girl students at the PG and UG levels, respectively.Tandon, in his presidential remarks, observed that distance education could play a significant role in enhancing the gross enrolment ratio in higher education and lauded the efforts of NOU in this direction. He appreciated that NOU had been conducting timely and fair examinations and was entrusted with the task of holding the first state-level combined BEd entrance exam.The chancellor also thanked the university for providing 25% fee concession to girls, free education to jail inmates and special facilities to the disabled scholars. He called upon the students to help establish high moral standards in public life through decent behaviour and discipline. “They must work for emancipation of the unprivileged and deprived sections of the society,” he said.According to the education minister, “Although we have attained some success in increasing the gross enrolment ratio in higher education, the qualitative aspect remains far from satisfactory. Not more than 10% of the colleges under any university are maintaining even the minimum standards.”NOU vice-chancellor (VC) Ravindra Kumar Sinha urged the government to provide 40 acres of land to NOU for its recognition from the UGC as per the latest regulations. “With a view to increasing gross enrolment ratio in higher education the university has set up study centres in 213 educational institutions, including 153 +2 schools in the state.
