El Nino behind warmer winter: Met

Until the northwesterly winds blow over Patna, there will be no chilly condition during daytime.” Besides El Nino, the northwesterly winds have also not been dominant over the Gangetic plains, resulting in warmer days in Patna,” a senior official at Patna Meteorological Centre said.According to Patna Meteorological Centre, easterly winds, which are blowing over Patna, carry moisture and prevent daytime temperatures from falling. PATNA: Despite minimum temperature hovering around 10 degrees Celsius from past three days, weather experts believe December is not yet as cold as it used to be in previous years. They said though the city is facing cold nights and mornings, days are still comparatively warmer. “This is basically due to two prevailing conditions – El Nino and absence of northwesterly winds, which carry cold winds from the Himalayan region,” said a weather expert, adding the “unusual” temperature trend would continue in the city for the next three days. The El Nino weather phenomenon refers to unusual warming of ocean waters in the Pacific Ocean that leads to unusually warm winter days in some parts of the country and the world.“The El Nino impact has led to maximum and minimum temperature remaining one degree above normal in Patna. It will be only after the arrival of northwesterly winds that the winter chill will increase, it said.India Meteorological Department’s weather forecast bulletin on Monday evening also predicted above normal minimum temperature across the country over the next few days.“Minimum temperatures in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar , Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and parts of Maharashtra will remain between 0.50 degree Celsius and 0.88 degree Celsius above normal,” the weather bulletin said.Pradhan Parth Sarthi, associate professor of environmental science, Central University of South Bihar (CUSB), said, “Besides El Nino, local factors are also playing role in warmer winter in the city.
