PATNA: The state transport department is set to roll out four new ring buses, christened ‘Airport Express’, between the Bankipore bus stand near Gandhi Maidan and the Jayaprakash Narayan International (JPNI) Airport in a week.According to transport secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, two buses each will ply on route numbers 100 and 200. They will reach the Patna airport via R-Block and Bailey Road, respectively.“Each bus will take 30 minutes to complete the 8km-long one-way journey. Commuters, travelling to the airport, can board the vehicle from Gandhi Maidan after every 30 minutes,” Agarwal told this newspaper on Wednesday and added the bus service was likely to be inaugurated at the airport in a week.Buses on route number 100 will halt at the Patna Junction, Old Secretariat and Haj Bhawan before reaching the airport, while those running on other route will stop at Biscomaun Bhawan, Dak Bungalow roundabout, Patna Junction, Income-Tax roundabout, New Secretariat, Patna zoo and Sheikhpura Mor.The department has taken the initiative to start bus services to the airport to meet the growing demand of passengers. “A person can reach the airport by paying a minimum fare of Rs 25. The 36-seater buses will be equipped with GPS tracking units, CCTV cameras, speed governors, water coolers, first aid kits and fire extinguishers,” Agarwal said, adding 60% of the seats would be reserved for women, disabled and elderly people.JPNI director Rajender Singh Lahauria, in a letter to the transport department on January 14, had demanded introduction of new bus services on the airport route. The matter was also discussed in various meetings of the Airport Advisory Committee.“Due to lack of transportation facilities, passengers find it difficult to reach their destinations on time,” Lahauria had written in his letter.A JPNI official claimed the airport authorities would provide space for parking the buses near the terminal building.“The daily footfall of passengers at the airport is approximately 12,960. People also come to drop and pick their relatives and family members up. The new buses will help minimize the traffic flow near the terminal building,” he said.
