PATNA: Despite the government’s tall claim to improve education scenario in the state, only 35.1% of the Class V students of government schools in rural Bihar can properly read Class II textbooks. It was revealed in the annual status of education report ( ASER ) 2018 released on Tuesday.The 2016 data showed 38% of Class V students could read Class II level text. The national average of Class 5 students in this category in 2018 stands at 44.2%.Though most of the states experienced improvement in learning level in the past two years, Bihar’s performance dropped by around 3%. As much as 30.5% of students studying in Class VIII in the government schools could not read Class II level text. But 93% students of private schools in the state passed on this parameter.Not only reading text, students in Bihar could not even do simple division. According to the ASER data, only 24.1% Class 5 students of government schools could do division. However, this is more than the national average of 22.7% in government schools.The state government schools have shown better results in providing basic civic amenities as 89.7% of the schools have drinking water facility. It is 4.9% more than the national average. In case of functional toilets, Bihar schools stood at 75.6% against the national average of 75.2%.Though 59.1% of the schools had library books available, the survey team found only 27.5% of children used library. The state also lags behind others in terms of computer with only 3.4% of the government schools having this facility and only 0.6% of the students had ever used it.When contacted, principal secretary (education) R K Mahajan refused to comment on the issue before reading the report. “Let us first read the report and we will take corrective measures required. But in a survey done by the Union government previous year, it was found that students of Bihar have good learning capacity and they are equal to the national average,” said Mahajan.
