DGP Handful of people to blame for liquor smuggling

PATNA: DGP Gupteshwar Pandey on Friday blamed a handful of people, including some in the government, for liquor smuggling in the state despite prohibition.“Mere 2-4% of people are responsible for liquor smuggling in the state. Action is being taken against these people,” the DGP said at the inaugural session of Bihar Police Week here. Next day, a special interactive session will be held between Patna University students and police officers to discuss ways to prevent frequent clashes on the university premises. Five of them were awarded capital punishment, 1,300 life imprisonment and 600 imprisonment for more than ten years. Efforts are on to increase conviction rate further,” he said.Asked about large number of pending cases, the DGP said either the inspector-rank officers of state police were not working according to police manual or senior officials were not taking take work from them.

Action is being taken against these people,” the DGP said at the inaugural session of Bihar Police Week here. “We have roped in canines specialised in sniffing liquor for effective implementation of prohibition,” he added.Pandey, who had run a campaign in several districts for success of prohibition when he was the DG of Bihar Military Police, said ‘sushashan’ would be ensured in the state at any cost.“Thanks to speedy trial, altogether 5,962 people were convicted in the state last year. Five of them were awarded capital punishment, 1,300 life imprisonment and 600 imprisonment for more than ten years. Efforts are on to increase conviction rate further,” he said.Asked about large number of pending cases, the DGP said either the inspector-rank officers of state police were not working according to police manual or senior officials were not taking take work from them. “Investigations in such cases should be completed before the general election,” he added.ADG (economic offences unit) J S Gangwar said as part of the Police Week function, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) officials were roped in to impart training to police officers on ways to check cyber fraud and other frauds involving e-wallets, UPIs, ATMs and credit cards.“A noted cyber expert associated with police of several states also came from Delhi for a session on cyber fraud for police officers,” he said,” adding several other sessions will be held during the week.On February 26, a parade will be organised at Mithilesh Stadium in which 553 officers and 529 constables from state police and 10 officers and 17 constables from paramilitary forces will be felicitated. Next day, a special interactive session will be held between Patna University students and police officers to discuss ways to prevent frequent clashes on the university premises.
