PATNA: The forthcoming Parliamentary polls are likely to disturb the examination schedule and academic calendar of different universities in the state. The exams of different undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses will be conducted from March to May and may now be rescheduled. Most teachers and non-teaching staff of different universities and colleges are likely to be sent for election training and assigned polling and counting duties. Besides, most of the educational institutions are likely to be taken over by the district administration for creating polling booths, counting centres and accommodating paramilitary forces for holding elections. Moreover, the administration may not be able to provide sufficient number of police personnel and magistrates at the examination centres as most of them will remain engaged in election-related works. The examination session of Patna University (PU) began in the last week of February and is likely to be completed by the end of May. The exams of all UG and PG courses, both under conventional and vocational modes, are programmed under a tight schedule with a view to regularizing the academic session. Any dislocation in the examination programme is likely to upset the entire academic calender, claim PU officials.PU authorities are in a fix as to how to conduct the examinations of different courses if teachers and non-teaching staff are assigned election duties. “Ensuring fair examinations will definitely require the presence of sufficient number of invigilators in halls and only teachers are supposed to do invigilation work as per the orders of the Patna high court,” said PU examination controller R K Mandal.Although polling in Patna is scheduled for May 19, university staff are likely to remain engaged in election-related works for more than a fortnight. “Besides, colleges of PU will also be acquired by the district administration much before elections,” said Mandal.Pataliputra University pro-vice-chancellor (VC) G K Chaudhary observed that if teachers and non-teaching staff were assigned poll duties, the examination and evaluation work would be adversely affected. The entire examination programme would have to be rescheduled and that would certainly disturb the academic calendar.Echoing similar views, Magadh University acting VC Karya Nand Paswan pointed out that the ongoing UG (Part II) examinations would end on March 18, but after that it would be very difficult to carry on with other exams of different courses in view of the elections.“A number of colleges, including Gaya College and Nawada College, have already been taken over by the respective district administration. Moreover, if the university staff are assigned election duties, it will not be possible to hold examinations as scheduled. The entire schedule will have to be revised,” Paswan said.Munger University VC Ranjit Kumar Verma pointed out that Degree Part I honours examinations of the university would end on March 16, but the examination of subsidiary papers would have to be rescheduled in view of the elections which are scheduled for April 11 and 29 in this region.Verma said, “University employees have already been requisitioned for election training and at least five colleges taken over by the administration for election purposes.”Similarly, all other universities in the state will face a similar situation and will have to reschedule their examination schedule, upsetting their academic calendars.
