Patna: Bihar DGP Gupteshwar Pandey is creating a lot of buzz these days. Ever since the Bihar Police initiated probe into the death case of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, the IPS officer has been busy with interviews to television news channels in relation to the investigation. In these constant appearances on TV, Gupteshwar Pandey is seen raising voice as he asks for justice for Sushant Singh Rajput. Along with making it to the headlines, the IPS officer has also become a talking point on social media.

However, not many are aware that Gupteshwar Pandey took premature retirement to contest Lok Sabha elections in 2009. Gupteshwar Pandey, a 1987 batch IPS officer of Bihar cadre, reportedly wished to contest from the Buxar Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket in 2009 as he hoped for a saffron party ticket. Gupteshwar Pandey is a 1987 batch IPS officer.

With the intention of contesting Lok Sabha polls, the now Bihar DGP opted for voluntary retirement scheme in March, 2009. His dream to plunge into electoral politics, however, could not be fulfilled. Gupteshwar Pandey was hopeful that the then sitting Buxar MP, Lalmuni Choubey, will be denied a BJP ticket, which would in turn brighten his prospects. Things did not go as per Gupteshwar Pandey’s plan. Lalmuni Choubey adopted a rebellious attitude, following which he was given ticket by the BJP. Nine months after his VRS, Gupteshwar Pandey requested the Bihar government to allow him to withdraw his resignation.

Nitish Kumar government approved Gupteshwar Pandey`s plea and the high-profile cop reported back to work. He went on to become the DGP of Bihar Police before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.  Gupteshwar Pandey has served as the SP of several Naxal-affected districts like Aurangabad, Jehanabad, Arwal, Begusarai and Nalanda. Gupteshwar Pandey was also the DIG of Munger and Muzaffarpur zone. Later, he became the IG of Muzaffarpur Zone and was DG of Bihar Police (training) before he went on to become the DGP.
