Covid-19 second wave hits train occupancy rate hard

  • | Monday | 10th May, 2021

According to sources, at least 147 pairs of long-distance mail and express special passenger trains are either originating from or passing through the ECR jurisdiction daily. The sudden surge in the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has badly affected the occupancy rate of passengers in all these trains causing a colossal loss of revenue to the railways, sources said.

The second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has hit hard the train occupancy rate under the jurisdiction of East Central Railway (ECR) in Bihar.

ECR chief public relations officer (CPRO) Rajesh Kumar said the Rajendra Nagar Terminal-New Delhi Rajdhani special train (02309) has total 1134 berths, but its occupancy rate is hardly 43%. Similarly, the Rajgir-New Delhi Shramjeevi Express special (02391) and Rajendra Nagar Terminal-New Delhi Sampoorna Kranti special (02393) are running with 78% and 53% occupancy rate respectively, he said, adding these special trains coming from New Delhi side have, however, full occupancy as people are returning fast to their native places in Bihar due to the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.

Patna–Howrah Janshatabdi special (02023/02024) is also running with 76% occupancy. Likewise, Patna-Ranchi special (02363) has been running with hardly 23% occupancy. Danapur-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminal special (01091/01092) is running with only 5.62% occupancy while Danapur–Lokmanya Tilak special (01164 ) has the lowest occupancy rate of 2.06% due to deadly impact of Covid in Mumbai, Kumar said.

Similarly, Danapur-Bengaluru Shangmitra Express special (02296) has 70% occupancy, followed by 5.99% and 14.3% in Danapur–Pune special trains (01472/01402) respectively. The Danapur-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj special (01190) is running with 6.5% occupancy of passengers.

The Patliputra Junction–Lokmanya Tilak Express special (02142) has hardly 54% occupancy, followed by 30% in Patna–Shalimar special (02214) and 45% in Danapur–Pune special (02150), he said.

The occupancy rate of Saharsa-New Delhi special (02553), Darbhnga–New Delhi special (02565), Muzaffarpur-Anand Vihar special (02557) and Raxaul-Anand Vihar special (05273) has also come down to the lowest ever. The Jayanagar-Amritsar special (04649) and Muzaffarpur-Ahmedabad special (09084) have also a poor occupancy rate while Patna-Ahmedabad special (09447) and Darbhanga-Ahmedabad special (09466) are running with 16% and 27% occupancy rate. The Barauni–Bandra Terminus special (09098) has 13% occupancy, he said.
