NMCH superintendent Dr Binod Kumar Singh said monsoon ailments have increased the number of pediatric patients in the hospital. According to him, `87 children are admitted against 84 beds in the pediatric ward. All 22 beds in NICU and 15 in PICU are full.

Monsoon-related diseases among children are on the rise, leading to overcrowding of all important government hospitals in the capital Patna. There is also a shortage of beds in Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) of PMCH and NMCH.

NMCH superintendent Dr Binod Kumar Singh said monsoon ailments have increased the number of pediatric patients in the hospital. According to him, `87 children are admitted against 84 beds in the pediatric ward. All 22 beds in NICU and 15 in PICU are full.

However, it is a matter of relief that none of these cases are of Corona. We are accommodating 836 patients against 761 beds by arranging additional beds from other departments. There is no shortage of medicines, injections or oxygen and proper medical care is being given to all the patients.

PMCH Superintendent Dr IS Thakur said that the number of admitted patients is more than the beds. “However, we have arranged for extra beds on the floor,” he says. Oxygen is also available for all critical patients and there is nothing to worry about. The Department of Pediatrics has about 125 beds. Most of the children have developed monsoon related problems like high fever, cough and pneumonia.

Dr Lokesh Tiwari, Head of the Department of Pediatrics at Patna AIIMS, said that about 60% of the beds in the Pediatrics department were also full, while its PICUs were up to about 80%. According to him, "Respiratory problems, neurological problems, gastrointestinal infections, pneumonia and high fever are important diseases that children suffer from."

Patna Civil Surgeon Dr Vibha Kumari Singh said that after the first consultation at the OPDs at primary health centres, children with serious problems are usually taken to PMCH and NMCH for better treatment.
