Her family members had made elaborate arrangements to welcome the baraat (marriage party) later in the day, realising little that the celebratory mood would soon give way to gloom. Early morning, they were informed that the bridegroom had eloped on the wedding eve with the girl with whom he had been in relationship. More shockingly, the boy had taken away Rs 3 lakh he was given in dowry at the tilak, a pre-marriage ceremony, performed on April 14. Stunned by the incident, the bride’s parents rushed to the house of the boy, Rajan Kumar, in Gewalbigha locality here, only to find his mother Kiran Devi there.

    Kiran Devi confirmed the elopement and said she was helpless in the matter. The boy’s mother also admitted that she was aware of her son’s love affair. “Hoping that things would change after the marriage, we had organised the tilak ceremony with pomp and show in the presence of relatives and friends.
