Using water in case of LPG cylinder fire can lead to a blast and putting ointment on a burned skin without using antiseptic can aggravate the pain. With dry and hot westerlies blowing in the region, there has been a spurt in fire incidents during the past few weeks. Fire safety expert Thakur N Pratap tells TOI’sabout causes of fire and how to prevent or douse it. Excerpts:There are broadly five types of fire: A — solid, including paper and woods; B — inflammable liquid, including petrochemicals; C — electrical fire, cooking and wielding gases; D — explosive materials like calcium carbide, caustic soda and active metals (fire in mines); E — electronic equipment.Fire comprises fuel, oxygen and heat. Blocking any of the three components would stop the fire. Thus, A type of fire can be doused by using cooling agent like water; Use foam, dry sand or dry powder of higher capacity like sodium bicarbonate to control B-type fire. In case of C-type, use only dry sand or dry chemical powder. And, sand should be used to douse D-type of fire. Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers should be used in case of e-type and only after switching off the power supply. The regulator on the cylinder should be switched off first, followed by the stove. Turn off power. If the kitchen door and windows are open, there are minimal chances of fire. Throwing water on a burning cylinder can lead to blast; hence, only dry sand should be used. In case of only gas leakage from the LPG cylinder, one should remain standing, but in case of smoke coming out of the cylinder or stove, the person should crawl if s/he has to move.Woollens should not be used in case a person has caught fire. Only cotton blanket should be used. Cold water should be continuously poured on the wound till the burning sensation ends. One may also put a piece of cloth drenched in cold water after applying antiseptic on the wound. Ice should be avoided. Ointment should be used only after applying antiseptic as ointment acts as a shield which would retain the heat.Fire Safety Week is observed across the country from April 14 to 20 in remembrance of the lives lost in the catastrophic fire that erupted in a ship named ‘Fort Stikine’ and the explosions that followed on April 14, 1944 at the Victoria Dock on the Bombay Port. It is observed to spread the message of fire safety and prevention.
