Madhesi stir cripples Nepal’s Terai region

The Madhesi parties are protesting conduct of second phase of local body elections on June 28, demanding constitutional amendment. Even three-wheelers, horse carts, cycle rikshaws and oil tankers were not allowed to enter Birgunj town from Raxaul, a border town of Bihar. Several Nepal-bound trucks remained stranded at Raxaul.Sources said police have detained more than 40 protesters in various Nepal districts. “We have launched a fresh protest opposing the local body elections in Terai region and in southern parts of Nepal,” Mahato added.The party has asked the protesters to intensify the agitation by holding peaceful rallies and mass meetings in all districts. Road communication between Raxaul and Birgunj was completely snapped.

RAXAUL: Educational institutions, government offices and shops remained closed in Nepal’s Terai region on Wednesday, the first day of the four-day general strike being observed by Rashtriya Janata Party-Nepal (RJP-N) and other Madhes-based parties to protest conduct of local body elections.Road communication remained paralysed and life thrown out of gear in Bara, Janakpur, Saptari, Sarlahi, Kapilvastu, Nawalparasi and other districts due to the strike. The protesters took out rallies in Birgunj and shouted slogans like ‘Sambidhan me sansodhan nahi toh nagar nikay chunaw nahi (no local body election without constitutional amendment)’.Rajendra Mahato, a senior RJP-N functionary, while talking to media persons at Birgunj, accused the Nepal government of failing to address the demands of Madhesi parties. “We have launched a fresh protest opposing the local body elections in Terai region and in southern parts of Nepal,” Mahato added.The party has asked the protesters to intensify the agitation by holding peaceful rallies and mass meetings in all districts. “We have been fighting discrimination against Madhesis, poor and dalits for the last several years, but there is no change in Nepal government’s racist and unitary mindset,” Mahato said.Sources said a massive rally of RJP-N was taken out from Ghantaghar in Birgunj which passed through the main roads of the town.
