Ruma Raj elected mayor of Munger

MUNGER: Ruma Raj was elected the mayor of Munger on Tuesday. All the newly elected 45 councillors of Munger Municipal Corporation voted in the election. Mumtaz is the daughter-in-law of former Munger Zila Parishad chairperson Shaira Bano.In the morning, district election officer-cum-district magistrate U K Singh administered the oath of office to the ward councillors before Ruma and Mumtaz filed their nomination papers for the mayor post.Sunil Rai was elected deputy mayor. Six councillors voted in favour of Suresh Nandan Singh Suresh.The new mayor said that keeping Munger clean and free from encroachment would be her priorities. He got 23 votes while Baby Chunki and Md Sahzad, former vice-chairman of Munger municipality, got eight votes each.

All the newly elected 45 councillors of Munger Municipal Corporation voted in the election. "I will try to provide clean administration and redress the tax payers' grievances in minimum time," said Ruma.Abhay Raj, special secretary to the state government, was observer while Ishwar Chandra Sharma, ADM, Devendra Kumar, district accounts officer, Anil Roy, deputy election officer and K K Upadhya, deputy director, PRD (Munger) assisted the DM in conducting the election.The election was deferred for over a month following litigation between Kumku Devi, former mayor, and Ruma in the Patna high court. Kumku had charged Ruma with providing false information in her election affidavit.
