Centre of excellence: Jipmer is the first government institution in south to get approval to provide online radiology service. | Photo Credit: T_Singaravelou more-in The Jawaharlal Institute of Post Gradate Medicine and Educational Research (Jipmer) has been given approval to run an ‘Online Radiology Service (ORS)’ by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Government of India, that would deliver expert diagnostic interpretation to remote regions. Known as “CollabDDS (Collaborative Digital Diagnosis System)”, it will be provided free of cost to Jipmer by the Ministry. The service is aimed at providing online consultation by Jipmer radiologist to another remote doctor/centre for diagnosis and treatment planning (teleradiology). In a press release, Jipmer Director Vishnu Bhat said being the Regional Resource Centre (RRC) for Telemedicine, it was the first medical institution in the government sector to receive it. With this initiative, the Centre hopes to solve of the problem of acute shortage of expert radiologists in remote areas. Ravi Kumar Chittorial, head of the IT Wing and Nodal Officer Telemedicine in Jipmer, said the software was a versatile tool funded by the National Knowledge Network (NKN) and jointly developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) Delhi, the CSIR Chandigarh, the IIT Bombay and the AIIMS Delhi. The CollabDDS provide radiological services to the medical and dental colleges for ‘Remote End Consultation’, Real Time Consultation’, ‘Peer-to-Peer Consultation’ and ‘Knowledge Sharing, Education and Research’. Technology partner The MOHFW is providing the necessary equipment while the NIC will act as the technology partner and provide the CORS (CollabDDS Online Radiology Services) application, training and support. One radiology consultant of Jipmer has been given training and CollabDDS software has been installed and tested with the NIC Delhi. As per the instructions of the Ministry, in the first phase (six months), 10 medical centres of South India had been identified by Jipmer to provide this service and later in phase 2 (7 to 12 months) the service would be extended to other centres of South India.
