Jipmer sets up telemedicine centres in four temple towns

Jipmer’s telemedicine centre for pilgrims visiting the Sabarimala temple provides online tele-consultation through space satellite technology provided by ISRO. According to Dr. S. Vivekanandan, Jipmer Director, the institution’s physicians will offer tele consultation to pilgrims visiting Tirumala temple run by the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam in Andhra Pradesh, the Guruvayoor temple in Kerala, the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram and the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple in Madurai. Growing needAccording to the Jipmer Director, against the backdrop of thousands of casualties every year in these temples, the telemedicine centres would fill the growing need for obtaining instant medical specialist’s advice.

Regional source centre The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), had already identified Jipmer as the Regional Resource Centre for telemedicine by virtue of which the institution was offering tele consultation to pilgrims in Sabarimala. Growing need According to the Jipmer Director, against the backdrop of thousands of casualties every year in these temples, the telemedicine centres would fill the growing need for obtaining instant medical specialist’s advice.
