Talking to media persons after inaugurating the police museum at the police headquarters here, Mr. Gautam said that not less than 700 cases of suicides were reported from Puducherry, which is the maximum one can come across the country. “It is my concern that suicide, a social problem in Puducherry, continued without being addressed,” he said. Mr. Gautam who would be leaving Puducherry on Monday to take up his new assignment in Delhi said that revenge killing was found to be occurring in Puducherry particularly by those undergoing imprisonment in jails. As many as four revenge killings were stopped by the police. The police also handled organised crime such as sale of lottery tickets with an iron hand and the nexus was identified and broken. In a major move, as many as 19 anti-social elements were detained under the Goondas Act while proposals to detain 36 more criminals had been sent to the government. Referring to the ATM fraud case, he said the CB-CID team had put in good work and the police would zero in on all those involved in the crime. “We have made good progress. Our team is capable of cracking the case.” Mr. Gautam said the Union Ministry had felicitated Puducherry police for implementing M-passport application. He had received the award from Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on June 26. The new DGP S. Sundari Nanda, transferred from Delhi to Puducherry, will assume office on July 2.
