On Saturday morning, French expats and Franco-Tamils gathered at the French War Memorial (Monument aux Morts). French Consul General in Puducherry Catherine Suard and Puducherry District Collector Devesh Singh laid wreaths at the war memorial and paid homage to the soldiers who laid down their lives during the World War II. Representatives of several associations of French nationals in Puducherry were present to commemorate the 229th French National Day. They placed floral wreaths at the war memorial. “Bastille Day is a historical event that espoused the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity. These values still stand crucial for a democratic nation,” Ms. Suard said. The police band played the instrumental versions of the national anthems of India and France.
